Leave Curveballs to the Big Boys

By: Joey Richards - Gavleston County Daily News

    Published March 31, 2008

If you’re younger than age 14, then don’t go to Chuck McElroy to learn how to throw a curveball. The former Major League pitcher doesn’t believe in teaching the pitch until a player turns 14.

“I know a lot of youngsters want to throw curveballs,” he said. “But I say no. I’m quick to say no, because I want every kid to have the chance to pitch at a higher level.”

The League City resident said a youngster’s muscles are still developing before age 14, and he said the muscles aren’t physically ready to handle the stress of throwing the curveball.

You can read the entire article on the Galveston County Daily News website.
